  • Day 1: Cusco - Huacarpay - Huayquecha Biological Station
  • We have an early breakfast to head to Huacarpay Lagoon in our vehicle for 45 minutes, where we’ll have the chance to observe the Bearded Mountaineer, Rusty Fronted Canastero, and others, such as: Streaked Fronted Thornbird, Puna Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Many Colored Rush Tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Wren Like Rushbird, Ruddy Duck, White Tufted Grebe, Giant Hummingbird, Rusty Flowerpiercer, Golden Billed Saltator, Black Tailed Trainbearer, and more.
  • After this activity, we continue to Paucartambo for 2 hours with some stops along the route, and in Paucartambo, we will have lunch.
  • Then we continue the journey to Huayquecha, making stops along the way to observe birds such as Creamy Crested Spinetail, Scarlet Bellied Mountain Tanager, Puna Tapaculo, Puna Thistletail, Golden Collared Tanager, Moustached Flowerpiercer, Line Fronted Canastero, Scribble Tailed Canastero, White Browed Conebill, Rusty and Yellow Tanager, Pale Legged Warbler, and Tree Stripe Hemispingus, finally arriving at Huayquecha Reserve Station.

  • Day 2: Huayquecha Biological Station
  • We have a very early breakfast to head in our vehicle to the tunnels to observe some endemics like Marcapata Spinetail, Red and White Antpitta, and others, such as: Gray Breasted Mountain Toucan, Band Tailed Fruiteater, Barred Fruiteater, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Scarlet Bellied Mountain Tanager, Grass Green Tanager, Rufous Antpitta, Black Capped Hemispingus, Superciliares Hemispingus, Chestnut Bellied Mountain Tanager, Rufous Capped Thornbill, Collared (Gould’s) Inca, Violet Throated Starfrontlet, Mountain Cacique, White Collared Jay, Black Faced Brush Finch, Red Crested Cotinga, Rufous Bellied Bush Tyrant, and more birds. After this activity, we return to the lodge for lunch. At the lodge, we observe hummingbird feeders, where we can see 9 species of hummingbirds, and in the afternoon, we head out in our vehicle to observe other high-altitude species, such as Yungas Pygmy Owl, Andean Guan, and then return to the lodge for dinner, followed by a search for Nightjars.

  • Day 3: Huayquecha - Cock of the Rock Lodge
  • We wake up early for breakfast, then head out with our belongings and a box lunch to Cock of the Rock Lodge, making many stops along the way to observe birds such as Inca Flycatcher, Golden Headed Quetzal, Blue Banded Toucanet, White Banded Tyrannulet, Streaked Necked Flycatcher, Chestnut Crested Cotinga, Barred Becard, Andean Potoo, Black Streaked Puffbird, Unadorned Flycatcher, Slate Backed Chat Tyrant, Citrine Warbler, Blue and Black Tanager, Pearled Treerunner, Montane Woodcreeper, Olive Backed Woodcreeper, Strong Billed Woodcreeper, Masked Trogon, and Semicollared Hawk. We stop en route for our box lunch and then continue to CORL, where we’ll find hummingbird feeders with species like Violet Fronted Brilliant, Many Spotted Hummingbird, Speckled Hummingbird, Green Hermit, Booted Racket-tail, and Bronzy Inca. After observing these birds, we settle into the rooms and take a shower. After dinner, there’s an optional outing to search for Owls and Nightjars.

  • Day 4: Cock of the Rock Lodge
  • After breakfast, we drive to Rocotal for about an hour, where we can observe Golden Headed Quetzal, Andean Cock of the Rock, Andean Motmot, Blue Banded Toucanet, Black Streaked Puffbird, Black and Chestnut Eagle, Solitary Eagle, White Eared Solitaire, Slate Tanager, Yellow Throated Tanager, Ochre Faced Tody Flycatcher, White Throated Antpitta, Variable Antshrike, and other birds like Tanagers and Flycatchers. After observing these birds, we return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, we birdwatch near the lodge, observing mixed flocks of birds such as Golden Tanager, Orange Eared Tanager, Yellow Rumped Antwren, Deep Blue Flowerpiercer, Montane Foliage Gleaner, Paradise Tanager, Slate Capped Flycatcher, and more, then return to the lodge for a shower.

  • Day 5: Cock of the Rock Lodge - Villa Carmen Station
  • We start the journey after breakfast to Villa Carmen, making stops along the way to birdwatch mixed flocks of birds such as Amazonian Umbrellabird, Orange Bellied Euphonia, Stripe Chested Antwren, Two Banded Warbler, Peruvian Piedtail, Slaty Gnateater, Lemon Browed Flycatcher, White Winged Tanager, Blue Necked Tanager, Yellow Breasted Antwren, Lanceolated Monklet, Golden Bellied Warbler, Cerulean Capped Manakin, Ash Browed Spinetail, Ornate Antwren, Cinnamon Faced Tyrannulet, Ornate Flycatcher, Blue Fronted Lancebill, Green Fronted Lancebill, Paradise Tanager, and Marbled Faced Bristle Tyrant. We stop for our box lunch and continue to Villa Carmen.
  • En route, we pass through two small towns, Patria and Pilcopata, until we reach our destination, where we settle into the rooms. Then we go for a short walk to observe birds like White Lined Antbird, Goeldi’s Antbird, Yellow Crowned Tyrannulet, Purplish Jay, Chestnut Fronted Macaw, Black Tailed Trogon, Magpie Tanager, and Hoatzin, and more. We return to the lodge for dinner, followed by an optional owling session.

  • Day 6: Villa Carmen Station
  • Today, we have an early breakfast to head to the bamboo trails, where we’ll have the chance to observe bamboo birds such as Bamboo Antshrike, Goeldi’s Antbird, Manu Antbird, White Cheeked Tody Flycatcher, Dusky Cheeked Foliage Gleaner, White Lined Antbird, Rufous Headed Woodpecker, Peruvian Recurvebill, Dusky Headed Flatbill, and Fiery Capped Manakin.
  • We return to the lodge for a delicious lunch, and in the afternoon, we take another walk along the trails to observe other birds such as Scarlet Hooded Barbet, Black Backed Tody Flycatcher, Plain Softtail, Chestnut Backed Antshrike, Johanne’s Tody Tyrant, Yellow Tyrannulet, Blue Throated Piping Guan, Gray Cowled Wood Rail, and many more. We return to the lodge for dinner, followed by an optional owl search.

  • Day 7: Villa Carmen Station - Amazonia Lodge
  • We have an early breakfast to observe Tinamou and Amazonian Antpitta feeders, then start searching for birds we haven’t seen yet, such as White Lored Tyrannulet, Black Banded Woodcreeper, Cinnamon Throated Woodcreeper, Plain Xenops, Chestnut Eared Aracari, Sapphire Spangled Emerald, Rufous Crested Coquette, Fork Tailed Woodnymph, Scarlet Macaw, Hoatzin, Amazon Kingfisher, White Winged Swallow, Yellow Bellied Tanager, Spot Breasted Woodpecker, and others.
  • After this activity, we return to the lodge for lunch and gather our belongings to start our journey to Amazonia Lodge, with stops along the way. We may observe the Yellow Billed Nunbird, a special and rare bird, and others like Fine Barred Piculet and Bluish Fronted Jacamar. Then we reach Atalaya Port, where we board a boat and travel downstream for 10 minutes to Amazonia Lodge’s port. Upon arrival, we settle into the rooms. At the lodge, we observe hummingbirds in the garden, such as Rufous Crested Coquette, Golden Tailed Sapphire, White Necked Jacobin, Gould’s Jewelfront, Gray Breasted Sabrewing, Blue Tailed Emerald, Koepcke’s Hermit, Sapphire Spangled Emerald, Fork Tailed Woodnymph, and Violet Headed Hummingbird, as well as some Tanagers and Woodcreepers. After observing these birds, we take a shower and have dinner. Optional owl search afterward.

  • Day 8: Amazonia Lodge
  • Today, we have a very early breakfast and start a trail to the tower on the hill, where we’ll have the chance to observe many species we haven’t seen yet, such as Military Macaws, White Hawk, Spangled Cotinga, Red Billed Tyrannulet, Opal Crowned Tanager, Fasciated Antshrike, Gray Antbird, Round Tailed Manakin, Carmiol’s Tanager, Western Striolated Puffbird, White Winged Shrike Tanager, Speckled Spinetail, Black Faced Antbird, Half Collared Gnatwren, Blackish Antbird, Hairy Crested Antbird, White Shouldered Antshrike, Rufous Vented Ground Cuckoo, and more birds.
  • After this activity, we return to the lodge for lunch, and in the afternoon, we take another trail walk to observe other birds such as Emerald Toucanet, White Throated Toucan, Channel Billed Toucan, Hoatzin, Green and Rufous Kingfisher, Chestnut Capped Puffbird, Lineated Woodpecker, Little Woodpecker, Crimson Crested Woodpecker, Plain Crowned Spinetail, Spot Backed Antbird, Black Faced Antthrush, Amazonian Antpitta, Razor Billed Curassow, Red and Green Macaw, and many more. We return to the lodge for dinner, followed by an owl search for species like Black Banded Owl, Tawny Bellied Screech Owl, Common Potoo, Common Pauraque, and Long Tailed Potoo. Then we return to the lodge.

  • Day 9: Amazonia Lodge to Cusco
  • We leave the lodge very early to go to the clay lick by boat, a 25-minute trip down the Alto Madre de Dios River, where we can observe Blue Headed Macaw, Mealy Amazon, Yellow Crowned Amazon, Orange Cheeked Parrot, White Eyed Parakeet, Blue Headed Parrot, Chestnut Fronted Macaw, and possibly Blue and Yellow Macaw flying, as well as toucans and raptors.
  • After this visit, we return to the lodge for breakfast, then prepare to return to Cusco. We first take a boat to Atalaya, then travel by vehicle to the Navel of the World for 7 hours. Along the way, we have our box lunch and arrive in Cusco around 6 PM.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Jungle cabins are basic but comfortable, some have electricity all day via solar panels and provide power to charge batteries from a generator, with double beds and mosquito nets (depending on the area), some shared showers, and some private, with a dining area and spacious lounge.
